In our family, certain things were never spoken about across generations. The silence had a weight you could feel in the room.
At the community dialogue, the three of us sat in the same circle. My grandmother spoke first. My mother cried. I held both their hands.
We left having said things to one another we had carried, unspoken, for decades. The circle gave us permission.
